Meal planning with allergies: the 14 allergens

UK law names 14 allergens that must be shown on food. Planning the week around them is easier when you leave them out from the start.

The 14 allergens

celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, soya and sulphur dioxide and sulphites.

Leave them out when you plan

On WeekTable, tick each allergen your table must avoid. Every recipe that contains it, as written, is left out of the week, and swaps never bring it back.

Check every packet, every time

Stock cubes, spice mixes, sauces and bread can contain any of the 14, and recipes change. Read the label of each packet you buy, even one you bought last week.

Tell your guests

If you cook for others, say what is in each dish. Keep the packets until the meal is eaten, so you can check if someone asks.
